Peace and Quiet
Col. Robin Olds was an Air Force fighter pilot and ace in World War II and the Vietnam War. He once remarked that while flying his F-4 Phantom over North Vietnam, his cockpit would sometimes become flooded with various alarms: gongs, bells, recorded voices, and buzzers that were warning him of radar lock-ons, aircraft system failures, low fuel and a host of other troubles. That alone would be distracting enough, but chasing a MiG-21 at the same time could really be off-putting. When that happened Col. Olds said he would turn off all the warning sounds and "just fly the damn plane." It's like that at work: phone calls, emails, memos, visits by people you don't want to see, someone paging you. So, I took a break and found solitude in the Men's Room. I'll fight my battles later.
