The hard drive, a 4.3MB WD Caviar 24300, started making thunks and bangs, and would no longer read it's data. Out of curiosity I opened it up and watched the things inside spin and whir while thunking and banging. Note the motion of the 'head' and the platters - the hard drive was powered up & running, madly trying to boot up.
